Electronics and Software Engineer

We are looking for an Electronics and Software Engineer to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to lead work on a disruptive technology!

  • London | Full/Part Time

The Tyre Collective is looking to expand our electronics and software capabilities by hiring an engineer for our Technical team.

You will be contributing to the development of the next iteration of our tyre wear capture systems. Tasks will include soldering PCBs, programming microcontrollers, building and testing systems before deployment, managing fleets in the field, supporting installation and commissioning and even getting involved in our cloud platform development. We run a number of projects with external partners, so good communication and management skills are important.

Day to day, you will report to the CTO and work closely with the Technical team. You will also interface with Research and Operations teams in the wider company. The role is technically varied and would suit someone who has a broad interest in electronics, software and connected devices as well as contributing to a project making a significant environmental impact. We’re looking for a technical generalist as opposed to a specialist, but with solid skills and a hands-on attitude. We expect you to support us in various site-based projects from installing and deploying systems, supporting pilots and experiments to testing new features.

  • • MSc/MEng in electronics, mechatronics, embedded systems or software development with a minimum of 2 years practical work experience in a relevant field.

    • Practical experience or interest in electronic and software:

    • PCB Design

    • Prototyping on breadboards

    • High voltage DC systems

    • C++ for microcontrollers

    • Python for scripting for Linux

    • JavaScript for web development

    • Ability to assemble electronic systems to a high quality finish, including soldering and debugging.

    • Ideate and prototype new features in hardware and software, from in-lab to outdoor pilot trials.

    • Enjoy taking a hands-on approach to problem solving, thrive when faced with technical challenges and proactively research and apply learning.

    • Work well in a team, able to succinctly communicate ideas/theories in layman terms.

    • Have a valid UK drivers licence is preferred.

  • • Competitive salary

    • Access to all Makerversity workshops (machine and digital fabrication tools) and discounts on Somerset House events.

    • Work in a dog friendly space

    • Hybrid working (1-2 days of WFH/week)

    • Tea, coffee and snacks provided, with monthly team lunch and Wednesday breakfast

    • Be part of a multidisciplinary, collaborative team and community.

  • The Tyre Collective is spearheading the capture and monitoring of tyre wear, the second largest microplastics pollutant in our oceans and a major contributor to air (PM) pollution. We are developing the next “catalytic converter” for tyre wear and closing the loop by upcycling captured materials. We are a group of impact-driven designers, engineers and researchers, challenging existing standards of zero-emission mobility for a cleaner, healthier future.
